Culture & Language

WATE Community and Cultural Development Services is committed to raising funds to provide programming that resurrects and restores Algonquin (Anishinaabe) culture and language in the Ardoch Algonquin community and among regional Aboriginal peoples.

Language and culture, as they are understood in Anishinaabe thought, flow from the land and waterscapes and are essential mechanisms for developing positive identity as human beings. To become balanced adults, children and youth must grow up knowing and understanding their place within the Natural World as distinct peoples. That understanding can only be achieved through insightful programming that enables participants to see the land, waterscapes and other living entities as integral to their identity and their survival.

Secure in their understanding of the relationships between human beings and the Earth, as well as the responsibilities that emanate from those relationships, our children will be able to move forward as adults in ways that promote the survival of Algonquin people into the future.

The cultural and linguistic programming developed through WATE's fundraising initiatives will enable children, youth, adults, and Elders to take pride in their heritage and identity as Algonquin people while also preparing them to contribute to Canadian and global society in meaningful ways.
